On this day, I decided to put myself first
5/18/2019 - This is me on the day I decided I would make Thread Tales of Austin a reality...
I had gotten a new rotation at work, one that I was unbelievably excited about because it was an opportunity to help build a team from the ground-up if successful. The work week prior to this photo, I was still in the “intro” phase, making my rounds to meet the leadership teams I would be working with. Everything had been going so well and I was about to have my last 1:1 with a long term leader I highly respected. After introducing my role & responsibilities he immediately responded with “ok, so what do you actually do?” I’m fine with constructive criticism, trust me I can take it. So I gave more context with specific problems I was hoping to solve. It wasn’t until he responded with “we [more like ‘he’] didn’t need someone like me in this position.”
I respectfully disagreed, ended the call early, and for the first time since joining the company, sobbed at work in a conference room by myself.
Following this experience I knew I had to take control of what I put my energy towards, and what I could control. Because no matter how much I love my job, some days & some people can make you feel completely worthless.
So on this day I decided to put myself first. I put on what was uniquely me & what’s made me happy on this particular day [in every since of the word]...metallic raincoat, sheer socks & all and told myself “never again will I let someone make me feel so low, and I’ll do everything I can do lift others up through the art I love so much.” ♥️ // #threadtalesatx
